Renting in later life

Here at Aged Advisor, we receive requests from time to time about Village rentals. We suggest the first port of call for information would be reading an excellent PDF guide called ‘Going for Good Renting - A Guide for Renting in Later Life’ put together by https://renting.goodhomes.co.nz/ which gives helpful, practical tips for elders who are looking at getting into the rental market.
There are a variety of options for rental accommodation you can consider in older age. These could be private rentals, council pensioners/seniors housing, Kāinga Ora accommodation, community housing providers (CHPs) accommodation, Abbeyfield, Papakāinga and kaumātua housing.
Below is a selection of suggestions of what is available in Aotearoa:
NEW ZEALAND WIDE:
The Aged Advisor website lists available rental accommodation across the country.
CHRISTCHURCH:
The Kenneth F. Weaver Trust Inc. is a fully registered Charitable Trust that owns and operates 29 cosy pensioner units exclusively for the elderly in Christchurch.
AUCKLAND:
Haumaru Housing delivers affordable rental housing specifically for older people, and is a joint venture between Auckland Council and The Selwyn Foundation. Currently they manage over 1,400 units for older people with a housing need.
TE AWAMUTU:

WESTERN BAYS:
Run by the district council. There are 34 in Te Puke, 13 in Katikati and 12 in Waihi Beach. To find out more about these houses go to the Western Bay Council website.
MASTERTON:
Masterton District Council has 76 flats and houses available for the elderly. These are located at Bodmin Flats, Truro Flats, Panama Village, and Laurent Place.
